Construction for Large-scale Digital Signage
Written by Guest Blogger: Drake MacDonald from ConstructionManagement.net
In recent years, large-scale digital signs have become one of most popular forms of advertising and communication. This is largely due to the fact that these signs seem to be an incredibly effective way of reaching consumers. By using large electronic screens, advertisers and businesses are able to quickly and efficiently send messages to passersby walking on the street or driving in the cars. Not only that, but these signs also allow businesses to send targeted messages to consumers at specific locations and times. Clearly, the benefits of large-scale digital signs are endless. Yet, their seemingly complicated nature may cause you to be hesitant about constructing one of your own. However, the truth is creating such a sign is far less complicated than you might think. In fact, you don’t even need construction management experience to get a sign up and running and start attracting more customers to your store. continue reading »

Christmas is just around the corner – use digital signage to increase sales!
Christmas is just around the corner and retail stores should take the opportunity to install a digital signage signage for their business during this festive season. The benefits are simple:
1. draw more customers into your stores with a christmas theme on the screens
2. showcase special christmas products on the screens
3. announcements and greeting your customers e.g “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year”
4. make more money… don’t worry about the ROI you’ll certainly make you’re money back within the first 2 years.
5. stand out from your competitors
If your store needs to stand out then digital signage is the most cost effective solution.

Digital Signage Klip: Spot the problem on this screen
We noticed a problem on a particular screen and took a quick snapshot of it- hence the bad quality. But if you look closely you’ll notice the error. Can you see it?
If you look closely you’ll notice scroll bars on the screen located on the left hand side. The content that was being played was a video and the player that was actually used was realplayer.
Here’s a picture of where the scroll bars was located:
So really, my guess is that the device connected to these screens was a PC with generic and standard software installed. For some retail stores, this setup is pretty common as it all comes down to budget and costings.

Digital Signage Klip: Gold Coast LED Screens
Last week I was on a family trip at the gold coast and noticed how digital signage was everywhere. Most of the retail stores at Surfers Paradise had an LCD screen – I spotted quite a few of the Panasonic 42 inch Plasma screens.
It was by sheer luck that I stumbled (I literally didn’t really notice the screen) across two LED Screens – one was located on the main streets of surfers paradise whilst the other was at a plaza (it didn’t have many people walking past there). In any case out of habit I decided to take a Klip of these screens. Sorry if I don’t have the exact location or know what the location is for these screens. I’ll promise that the next time I take a photo I’ll include the GPS co-ordinates.
Here’s also a quick video of what I saw (sorry for the bad filming):

The truth uncovered: Playing music in your business environment is too expensive
I just finished reading an article from TechDirt and was shocked to find out how much the yearly licensing fees are for playing music in a nightclub or a restaurant. Here is a short extract from the article:
“It wants to increase licensing fees in a 120-seat restaurant to $19,344 a year — up from $125. Small cafes would be slugged with a 4729 per cent yearly increase from $124 to $5860.”

For those digital signage businesses who provide their clients with a digital signage solution that plays music in the background, have you considered what legal implications are involved and what the licensing requirements are? Even if your client has paid for the music clips or videos!
In Australia, retail stores that play music – whether from the radio, purchased CDs, computers, digital signage are required to pay a licensing fee otherwise it may be considered breaching copyright laws and eventually be fined thousands of dollars.
Now we all know that music can set the mood and atmosphere in your store, nightclub, restaurant or cafe but did you know that you may have to pay a licensing fee for playing music in your business environment or anywhere in public areas? Basically, if you play music in your store you need to have a PPCA public performance license to play protected sound recordings and an APRA public performance license to play musical and literary works. For more information about this visit https://transactions.business.gov.au/BLIS/musiclicence.aspx
All I can say is, just make sure that if you’re running a business or if you’re installing a digital signage solution with audio for one of your clients make sure you mention these licencing requirements to your client otherwise they (or possibly your business) may end up paying a hefty fine – so don’t risk it.
After thinking about this situation, do you believe a license is required for playing videos of unsigned artists playing original songs from Youtube in your store or business environment?
Feel free to submit your answer as a comment.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but my understanding is that because these artists are unsigned (i.e don’t have a label) the PPCA, or APRA won’t be paying them one cent so why should you pay for the license fee if all you’re playing is songs from these unsigned artists. For example, here’s one of my favourite Youtube R&B groups called LEGACI playing an original song. Keep it up boys.

Why digital signage?
Everybody knows the conventional method of using posters to deliver messages, whether it is to sell a product or service or to inform the audience.Using a digital signage player, Digital Signage takes this traditional approach of delivering messages and allows for the greater control and flexibility over how the message is delivered on a digital screen.
Digital Signage can be used to replace or enhance current methods of advertising and distribution of information.
With Digital Signage:
- there is no need for printing – saving you money on printing costs and costly mistakes with printing
- there are real time updates – content can be updated in real time or scheduled to occur when you want. Digital Signage allows you to display messages immediately.
- there are limited resources required – depending on your digital signage solution all that would be required is a person who would update the content
- there are no additional distribution costs – saving you money on freight and distribution costs. With Digital Signage you are not limited with one advertisement in one location but you can display multiple advertisements in the same location or have the same advertisement displayed across all your businesses displaying Digital Signage.
- there is opportunity to use animation and sound – helping to drive traffic to your store or keeping them there for longer by attracting and maintaining their attention.
Digital Signage can be effective in a variety of environments including:
* Retail stores
* Restaurants
* Pubs
* Airports
* Schools
* Medical Centres
* Corporations
