It is the Panasonic Embedded player ETX1312C1000 which can only be used with Panasonic Plasma screens with the Slot compartments. These units come with pre-installed Windows Embedded XP or Linux and are just like any other ordinary PC’s except that they allow you to hide these in the actual screens. The current unit only has 1GHz processor which can sometimes videos with scrolling ticketers to lag, although we’ve heard rumours that there is an new model being released which has much higher CPU specs. The embedded player actually takes up two slot compartments so you need to be aware of this.

Below are the specs from Panasonic’s website:

Key Benefits:

Embedded Design

The PC integrates seamlessly into a Panasonic professional plasma.
It minimises the need for cabling, making installation easier, removing the
need for a separate PC or an extra air conditioning unit to keep it cool.

Control

Change the way you communicate to staff and customers. Enjoy the flexibility of updating your content in real time, when you want it, where you want it and as often as required.

Power

A single power source ensures that no additional power is required.
With an ultra low voltage chip of 15 watts, energy usage is lower than a light bulb.

Reliable

Based on an industrial grade PC platform, the system is stable and reliable for uninterrupted playback of multimedia content.

Speed

Unlike traditional forms of signage such as billboards and point-of-sale posters, the digital signage solution allows dynamic and rich content, ensuring fast transfer of information via the screens.

Scalable distribution

The application is scalable from one screen to thousands of screens nationwide, networked via wireless, WAN, LAN or satellite distribution.

Low Noise

Low noise operation makes Panasonic professional plasmas suitable for hospitals, hotels, libraries and museums.

Say goodbye to LCD and Plasmas screens and let’s make way for the latest LED screen technology. You may have already started noticing that prices for LCD screens and Plasma screens have been dropping in the past few years and one of the many reasons for this is the introduction of the next screen technology “LEDs”. Now, your typical LED billboards have been around for quite some time now but now screen manufactures are developing screens for the home and for commercial purposes.

So today, we thought we’d look at some of the features of the Samsung LED HDTV and in particular the UN55B8000 (55″ 1080p LED HDTV). Firstly, you’ll probably have already noticed by the description that the screen is 55 inches – yes it’s big but also it’s ultra slim (1.2″ deep). The other great features about this unit is that it is environmentally friendly – it uses 40% less power consumption than the traditional LCD screens.

The other additional features is that it is Internet@TV capable, meaning it allows you to receive content via Yahoo!®, Flickr®, and other online TV Widgets on screen (would this be good enough for digital signage???). USB 2.0 Movie: Multi-Media Center makes it easy to watch movies, browse photos and listen to music on your TV. But wait, there’s more! Just say you feel like playing a game of chess or cooking instead of watching TV. Samsung Series 8 LED TV’s Content Library Flash feature lets you do just that. Enjoy hours of built-in entertainment features, then personalize it by adding content that’s available online. And downloading is easy. There’s so much you can do with te Series 8 LED TVs.

In terms of price… it’s not so bad, it’s actually only US$3,999.99 (who uses 1 cents these days?). Anyways, if you’re intending to capture your audience using the best picture quality – bright and clear images then look no further… LED is the way to go.

We would love to review this product when it hits Australia, so if someone from Samsung wants us to review the product send us an email to review@advertiseme.com.au

With the increasing focus for businesses to help reduce global warming, what measures are we taking to ensure our digital signage solution is “environmentally friendly”?

As new technology is being developed, most manufacturers are designing digital signage products which will help reduce power consumption.

Generally for a digital signage solution one would need a screen and also a digital signage player (can be a PC, a small form factor embedded PC, or digital signage player).

When implementing a digital signage solution one should consider the following:

- the average power consumption of a plasma screen is 350 watts compared to LCD 213 watts

- the average power consumption of a PC is 78 watts compared to an embedded PC 8 watts (linutop)

If power efficiency is what you’re after, take note of the following:

- use screens, in particular LCD’s that consume less power

- screens uses power even when they’re not turned on!!! The standby power uses several watts. The best thing to do is to turn the device from the power point.

- decrease the LCD’s backlight. Most LCD’s these days have the option to control the intensity of the backlight but by doing so it makes the LCD screen less bright.

- use software tools to automatically shut down your digital signage player and screen rather than leaving it on 24/7

If you have any further ideas on how to futher save power, please let us know or discuss it on our digital signage forum.
