Hungry for a Digital Menu Board

Take away stores are fast adopting the use of digital menu boards rather than static poster or light boxes. The advantages of moving to digital is quite obvious but let me summarise them again:

  • You can quickly and easily update prices on a digital board rather than spending more money to print the posters
  • Use animation to grab attention. A video clip of the food is more enticing than a static image.
  • Schedule the food menu based on the time of the day. E.g. Breakfast for the morning, lunchtime for the afternoon and dinner for the evening.
  • Easily manage and update the content yourself rather than relying on a designer. Once you have the template designed, all you need to do is just update the content. The process of changing the content has now become so much easier.
  • It’s now more affordable!!!!

Now this week, we assisted a Pizza Take away store with the implementation of a digital signage solution.3 screens were installed behind the front counter and 1 near the front. The front screen is used for specials whereas the 3 behind the counter is used to display the menu. The solution is simple but most importantly affordable – this was the main criteria for the business owner.

Below are a few pictures of the implementation:

Digital menu boards can be implemented with the most simplest solution e.g. using a Screen with a built in player or for a large retail chain it can be a network of digital signage players with Content Management Servers.

It’s only a matter of time before we will see all menu boards going digital. So if you’re interested in a digital menu board have a look at this special package.

Static Displays to Digital Displays

Using a digital display instead of a static display is as easy as 1-2-3. Over the years, we realised how a large percentage of retail owners are hesitant and reluctant in using a digital display because no one took the time to clearly explain what the benefits are in using digital signage. The majority of them are still installing and purchasing static displays i.e lightboxes and posters which is a bit of a waste of money.

Yes, its true that the cost of digital displays is generally higher than the static display – there’s no doubt about that. But here’s why you should still consider in using a digital display:

1. Printing costs – there are no printing costs involved with digital displays. If done correctly, you don’t even have to spend too much money with design costs as you may already have existing content from your website or marketing material.

2. Resource costs – how much time is spent replacing static images. Wouldn’t it be more effective if your staff was actually serving customers rather than spending time hanging posters?

3. Animation and engaging content – this is used to attract more customer into your store.

4. Live information – e.g news, weather, twitter posts, facebook information, you can’t do this with static display!

The switch is easy… just contact advertise me and we’ll take care of everything for you.

What do you do when your screen fails?

Here’s a picture I took of a takeaway store that clearly had a problem with their digital signage solution:

But what’s interesting is that they at least had a backup plan – ie. static posters.

So, what do you do when your screen fails?

Say Ahhhhh! Digital Signage at the Dentist

dentistJust the other day one of my tooth fillings suddenly broke and being annoyed at having a hole in my tooth I immediately visited the local dentist. I was quite surprised that quite a number of Dentists are not using digital signage in their theaters or offices – let me explain how digital signage can be used in this industry.

The majority of us will at least once a year visit the dentist, so you all should know what I’m referring to when I use the term “the Dentist chair” – yes that comfortable chair that has a little basin on the side, an extendable arm with a light, and is able to arch all the way back so that the person sitting on it ends up staring at the ceiling (see the top image). If you’re thinking in the right frame of mind you may have just encountered a “light bulb” moment – yes… that’s the spot for digital signage. We talked about location, location, location in one of our previous posts and I believe that’s the perfect location for digital signage.

How long do we generally sit on the Dentist chair, 10 minutes? 30 minutes? Well, my visit lasted 45 minutes starting at a blank ceiling and I must honestly say it was very boring.   If there was a digital signage solution installed it can be used for quite a number of purposes and these are:

1.      Depending on the age group, the dentist can offer to show a movie, music, a kid’s show to entertain the patient. Rather than having a screaming child, showing one of their favourite shows will help them to calm down making the experience for both the dentist and the patient more comfortable.

2.      You may be able to potentially connect headphones to the digital signage solution and let the patient listen to calm music or the audio coming from the video. This is better than listening to all the drilling and crunching noises

3.      Educational information – use it to display educational information/videos on teeth maintenance and oral care

4.      For those who are intrigued at watching the dentist working inside your mouth, why not have a small camera attached to the drill bit thingy and show the video capture on the screen

5.      Advertising – basically you can make some passive income from displaying advertisements. Colgate, OralB and other toothbrush/paste manufacturers would definitely jump on board if there was a network of screens

6.      Motivational quotes – I recently watched a movie and in one scene the dentist had two posters stuck on the ceiling. If I remember correctly the quotes where:

Hang in there baby!!!

“Only a life lived for others is worth living.” – quoted from Albert Einstein

Wouldn’t it be great if the dentist a had digital signage solution to display a number of animated motivational quotes rather than a static poster.

So there you go, that’s how we would have used digital signage in this location. I do hope that the next time I visit the dentist I would be able to sit on that chair and maybe watch a movie or see something interesting or educational.

How have you seen digital signage implemented at the dentist?

How does digital signage work?

Understanding digital signage at its most basic level simply means understanding the traditional forms of advertising. Technically, the equipment used in Digital Signage means that you are in control of what, when and how your message is displayed. As an example, the following compares the steps and time taken in getting the message across.

Traditional Posters Digital Signage
Day 1 Content creation and design Day 1 Content creation and design
Day 2 – 4 Printing Day 1 Upload content and schedule deployment
Day 5 – 7 Distribution (mail, courier) Day 1 Advertisements displayed
Day 8 Hang posters
Day 8 Advertisements displayed
