Last year we noticed a number of companies launching their audience measurements tools as part of their digital signage solution. The solution normally consists of a digital screen, server, digital signage player and a webcam. By using the webcam, the software tool detects and counts the number of people who are looking at the screen. For some solutions, it can even go beyond just tracking this number and determine what gender and age the person that looked at the screen was.
You may be asking yourself, “Do I really need this solution?”. If you’re a marketing or advertising company then yes, this information is critical. Using raw data and number to present to your advertisers will make a compelling reason why they should advertise on your screens.

Quite a number of companies are now giving their customers the option of hiring digital signage equipment instead of purchasing it outright. There are quite a number of benefits for doing this and these are:

1. Tax reasons – for leased or rented equipment you can claim the full cost as an expense
2. If the equipment is rented, then you have the option to upgrade your hardware once you contract has ended
3. No initial upfront costs – some businesses don’t have the upfront costs and would have their money invested in purchasing actual products to sell

There are many more reasons but we would like to hear from you what these reasons are.

I’m so sad to hear that Google have decided to discontinue the Wave product. It appears not everyone jumped on board with using this product and hence the reason why they have canned it. It was a good idea, the product seemed promising but it now has all come to an end. Oh well, I guess all the hype about the next email system confused everyone.

I just read on the digitalsignagearticles.com that a few people have posted a twitter post about an Italian Tax on digital signage. Basically the article is about a tax (100 euro per year per screen/location) that needs to be paid by network operators in Italy to the government. I haven’t really seen that many implementations in Italy but it sounds like their Government is trying to cash in the digital signage industry. Why – because the Government can see that $$$ and revenues businesses are making from advertising on digital screens.

I’m pretty sure that this digital signage TAX will flow through many of our countries and operator or the owners of the screens will be expected to pay the government for having a screen at the front of their store facing the public areas.

So let’s start a poll to see what your responses are.

Are there any countries that are currently paying for digital signage Tax?

Feel free to submit your answer as a comment.

I came across an interesting article on TheAustralian.com.au website (I was reading the article from my Blackberry via RSS) and I wanted to share this with everyone – especially after we posted an article on the weekend talking about the Microsoft Surface. What makes this article interesting is the fact that there may be a rival system (application is called Focus) to the Microsoft Surface. According to the article the application uses cameras to interpret gestures and movements made across a table to control an onscreen computer interface. In this case it can be a table like the Microsoft Surface. What’s more interesting is that the hardware costs less than $5000 (consists of a projector, a laptop, a motion sensor and a table) and it integrates with the Apple iPhone.

This may be a good opportunity for us to interview these students if we get a chance since they are local students.

Have a read of the article here and there’s also a video explaining how the system works.

This weekend I decided to play around with the google search features and stumbled across the “Wonder Wheel”. So what I did was I typed the search term “digital signage” in the google search bar. Google displayed the most relevant websites related to this search term, in Australia our advertise me and Digital Signage portal are on the 1st page and we’re pretty happy about this result.

Anyways, I clicked on Show Option at the top left hand corner above the first search result and it displayed several other options available. I clicked on Wonder Wheel and Google displayed this:

The google wonder wheel was released in May 2009 and basically displays relevant and related search results. In my particular example, the search results relating to digital signage where:
digital signage jobs
digital signage blogs
digital signage freeware
digital signage software
digital signage player
digital signage solutions
outdoor digital signage
digital signage download

So out of curiosity, I clicked on the term digital signage blog and we were’t surprised that this very blog was listed at the top of the results. What also happened was the wheel expanded to show another wheel. This is an interesting concept and it’s something that everyone should be aware of.

If you’ve seen the movie Avatar then you should know that I’m refeering to when I mention about 3D. Yes, 3D technology is now becoming more affordable but importantly its catching the attention of the digital signage industry.

For those of you who didn’t know, there are quite a number of digital signage players in the market that are using Mozilla Firefox on the Linux platform as their default browser to play content. To the viewer, this does not become apparent since the developers cleverly designed the application to run in full screen so when content is played you don’t see the tool and menu bars.

One of the many reasons why most digital signage companies are using Firefox compared to Internet Explorer is due to the fact Firefox is open source and comes with many add-ons. One of these add-ons is the ability to run the application in Kiosk or Digital Signage mode. The other obvious point is that it’s free and comes packaged with many Unix based OSes.

Now, Mozilla has just recently released Firefox version 3.6 which is meant to be quite an improvement in performance and features. According to Firefox loading web pages is much faster and uses less CPU. To be honest I haven’t really made any measurements but I haven’t noticed any differences in performance when using Windows XP. Looking at my task manager it still uses like 198,252K of memory – is this a memory leak. Is this normal?

There’s also this new type of theme called personas, which allow users to change the appearance of Firefox. This feature doesn’t really help with digital signage applications.

Now, one of the features which will definitely help the digital signage community is that open native video can now be displayed in full screen and also supports poster frames. Visit the firefox website for more information.

So now I’m wondering how many digital signage software companies are planning to upgrade or test Firefox 3.6 Are you one of them?

First of all, Happy New Year to all our readers – we hope you had a relaxing break and are energised for another year of digital signage. To kick off the year, we decided to engage our techie community and discuss about the importance of NTP.

NTP stands for Network Time Protocol and is commonly used to synchronise a computer’s/digital signage player‘s date and time with a specific time source server. It can be a hardware based GPS time source server from Symmetricon which I’ve used in the past, an Internet NTP server – see ntp.org for more information, or even your local Windows Active Directory Server can be used as a time server. The most challenging part when using NTP is ensuring that your actual source server has the correct date and time.

Most digital signage businesses should know what I’m talking about since ensuring the Content Management Server and digital signage player’s date and time are all in synch is crucial for any large digital signage network especially when used for scheduling content.

registered on the digital signage portal http://www.digitalsignageportal.com have you registered #digitalsignage

Google has recently invited selected google account members to the “google wave”, and just recently I was wondering how Advertise Me could integrate this new communication tool with digital signage. Fortunately, the digital signage players we use will allow us to quite easily integrate google wave as the system is web capable.

If I understand how google wave works correctly, it would mean that updating content will be easier than before and it may also mean that a CMS (Content Management Server) may no longer be needed. I’ll stop here and keep pondering and brainstorming.

It’s another weekend so you know what that means? It’s time for some weekend fun. For this weekend fun post, I thought I’d look around for a fun video to post. Generally, most of the content for digital signage is serious (depends on the environment) but I believe that sometimes it’s those funny ads that stand out and makes it go viral. So here’s a Youtube video clip of a McDonald’s funny advertisement:

What I found most interesting about this video from McDonalds is that it doesn’t matter which language the video is in, as long as it portrays the intended message to the audience then in my eyes it’s definitely a sure winner!

Today’s great news is that Google is planning to release it’s own OS called Google

Chrome OS and will compete against the almighty Microsoft Enterprise. We believe this is great news for the digital signage community because of the following reasons:

1. It’s Open Source and will be free. Moving towards an open source OS, will provide a significant savings to you and your clients.

2. According to Google, the Chrome O.S is fast and efficient. This is perfect for digital signage.

3. It’s lightweight – you will be able to install this on a netbook and run your digital signage application.

4. Its secure – like the Google Chrome browser, Google has designed the security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. This means spending less time patching!!!

5. Designed for the web – since most companies are now moving towards SaaS then this is a perfect match.

We look forward to testing various digital signage software on the Google Chrome and we can’t wait to get our hands dirty.

And a final note: Thanks google for making our life easier and cheaper for everyone!

This may sound a bit ridiculous but has anyone thought about using your Iphone as a mobile digital signage player? I mean lets think about this, if people can use the Iphone to watch movies and video clips why can’t it be used as an integrated digital signage player. The unit can be easily connected to the Internet and it also has a touch screen so really its perfect for interacting with your intended audience. With the sheer number of Iphone users out there, setting a digital signage network can be easily established.

All we need now is a digital signage Iphone application… and my guess is that someone is already developing one.

Out of curiosity I decided to perform a Google trend search for the term digital signage – the exact term “Digital Signage” was performed to see what the trend has been over the years. From the image on the left, you can clearly see that the number of people searching for this term has increased over the years and I believe it will constantly continue to grow. But what I was more surprised from the information Google Trends provided was the regions that provided the highest searches. The majority of these regions where the Asian countries.

Here are the results:

Regions

1. Taiwan
2. Malaysia
3. South Korea
4. South Africa
5. Singapore
6. India
7. Canada
8. New Zealand
9. Australia
10. United States

From these results can one assume that there is a higher demand (based on search trends) for digital signage in Taiwan or Malaysia (I’m quite surprised to see malaysia being ranked second on the list) compared to countries like New Zealand, Australia and the United States?
