Techie Question: What is the best way to split your VGA signal?
One of the challenges with splitting your VGA signal is the ability to maintain the video quality and aspect ratio of the original video source. There are a number of ways to split your VGA signal and the main purpose of doing so it to display the same video content across to multiple screens. This basically means a cost savings as you will only need to purchase 1 PC/digital signage player rather than having multiple players for each screen. The only limitation is distance, the VGA video quality degrades for longer distances.
Here, we will look at 3 ways of splitting up the VGA signal (assuming you just want to split 1 video signal to 2 screens):
|
2 way VGA Cable |
When we used this we noticed that the quality was pretty poor. Especially when adding a second VGA cable you immediately notice a difference. No power is required hence the reason why the degradation. |
|
2 Port VGA Splitter |
Required power to be connected to it. For the video input it requires a VGA extension cable that has a male on one end and a female on the other. Better than the 2 way VGA cable but noticed fuzzy lines running through the screen and some ghosting. |
|
Video Card with dual output (for PC’s) |
You will need to find a video card that supports two VGA outputs. The Radeon x300 video card is one that we’ve tried and tested. Video quality was perfect or as good as the video card can output. The advantage of using this video card was that you didn’t need an additional power point and you are also able to change the video configuration to clone or extended. |
For implementations of more than 2 screens then you will need to get a splitter that caters for more video output ports, there are many brands and model in the market but just make sure you test it before installing it at your clients sites.
Are there any other methods people have used to split the VGA signal?

First digital signage magazine in Australia
We recently received the first digital signage magazine published by an Australia company (alchemedia publishing) and this is really a good sign of the growth of digital signage in Australia.
The great thing about the magazine was the case studies of digital signage implementations of local business in Australia. There is also the traditional advertisements of digital signage companies and manufacturers and this is really good to have as a local directory. We look forward to receiving future magazines and hope to eventually feature in an article.

Digital Signage for real estates
digital signage is becoming quite popular for the real estate industry. I’ve seen quite a number of digital signage implementations from various companies and they all to appear quite effective. Some also includes touchscreens but what I found quite amusing was that people still don’t really know how to use these. I saw a lady last week trying to interact with the screen and she couldn’t browse through the properties … if only I had a video camera. I could tell she was quite frustrated with it and just walked away after a few minutes.
Lesson learnt #1: If you are deciding to use a touch screen, make sure you target users that don’t know how to use computers and technology.
Lesson learnt #2: Maybe schedule the screen to be turned off if the office is not open. I don’t see the point in having the screens turned on if the potential buyer can’t talk to someone about it.

Multitouch Whiteboards for Schools and Meeting Rooms
Multitouch whiteboards are now becoming quite popular in schools and meeting rooms. In particular, having the ability to share content, collaborate information with others at the same time is something of the past. Being authorised resellers of Panasonic we want to introduce our readers the latest multitouch whiteboard UB-T880 (77″) from panasonic. This unit was launched in Australia last month and they have been available in the US and other parts of the country for a while. The cost for one of this unit is RRP $2,869 but we’ll be able to hopefully reduce this price. For those that want bigger screens you can get the UB-T781W – obviously for a higher cost.
Below is a video demonstration from Panasonic. As you can clearly see from the video there are many uses and industries this whiteboard can be used in. If you think about it, this can also be used for digital signage implementations…

Panasonic Announcing Australia’s largest Full HD 3D Plasma Display
This month, Panasonic Australia announced the largest full HD 3D plasma display screen (103-inch commercial grade screen) that will be launched in 2011 along with the 85-inch 3D display. For some of the features read this post. My guess is that 3D will be quite popular in 2011 which means the traditional Plasma or LCD 2D screens will become more affordable – this equates to more digital signage implementations for everyone.

Should digital signage operators pay TAX for digital signage screens?
I just read on the digitalsignagearticles.com that a few people have posted a twitter post about an Italian Tax on digital signage. Basically the article is about a tax (100 euro per year per screen/location) that needs to be paid by network operators in Italy to the government. I haven’t really seen that many implementations in Italy but it sounds like their Government is trying to cash in the digital signage industry. Why – because the Government can see that $$$ and revenues businesses are making from advertising on digital screens.
I’m pretty sure that this digital signage TAX will flow through many of our countries and operator or the owners of the screens will be expected to pay the government for having a screen at the front of their store facing the public areas.
So let’s start a poll to see what your responses are.
Are there any countries that are currently paying for digital signage Tax?
