2011 Digital Signage Quiet Achievers
2011 has been great year for digital signage but in the media all we hear about is the big digital signage manufacturers/developers launching new products and the large digital signage network owners growing their networks.
We hardly hear about the smaller companies launching their unique and innovative digital signage solutions and this year we want to recognise the quiet achievers. So if you’re a small business, let us know about your digital signage project so we can share this with the rest of the digital signage industry.

Advertising Digital Signage networks
Last week I was at my local shopping centre and noticed that they installed digital signage. The setup was as follows:
- There were two 47″ LG screens hanging from the ceiling.
- There was an LG player the back of the first screen
- Connected to the player there was a Telstra USB 3G modem – I’m assuming this was needed for Internet connectivity
- There was also a VGA splitter that connected the Video output to the second screen
Now, in terms of content and what was displayed on the screen seemed quite disappointing. There was only two ads displayed on the screen. One was the company’s own advertisement and the other was just an image.
My initial thoughts were, “How is the company making money?” and “Are the network owners already struggling to find advertisers?”
I believe this is a common issue for digital signage network startups. Most believe that having a network means that they can easily generate advertising revenue but that’s not always the case. Finding advertisers is the biggest challange easpecially if the network only has a handful of screens. Its a numbers game -most of the advertisers want exposure and they are willing to pay for it if the exposure is high.
So before jumping at the chance of setting up a digital signage network make sure you have advertisers ready to buy your advertising space…. and good luck.

Guest Post Digital Signage: Connecting Communities with Digital Signage Networks
Written by Guest Blogger: Kelly Johnson
With DVRs giving us the ability to skip TV commercials, newspaper readership declining and a feeling of bombardment from online ads, advertisers are getting creative. Communities around the country are finding a fresh, new way to target potential customers through digital signage network advertising. This medium is more targeted, effective and cheaper than many traditional forms of advertisement. It targets consumers when they are out and about and in some cases, at the point of sale.
The digital signage network connects communities with screens in key locations and ads from non-competing businesses. Independent marketing companies choose key community locations where large amounts of people gather to eat, shop or play. Some marketing companies will even offer to set up a screen in a business for free if the business owner will allow other businesses to advertise on their screen.

Confusion between Landscape vs Portrait content
Last week I had a brief discussion with one of my colleagues about the confusion between Landscape vs Portrait content and the extra effort required to maintain content on these two types of layouts. In a digital signage network with screens in both landscape and portrait orientations, it can be quite confusing for the content creator who maintains a large network of screens. On a landscape screen you create landscape designs and for portrait screens you create portrait designs. Well, I mentioned to him that most administrators of the digital signage network may not be able to easily distinguish the difference especially if the network group of a digital signage screens are a mix and do the clients really understand the extra effort (may even cost) required.
There are some digital signage solutions that are just able to automatically rotate and crop the content so that it fits on the screen no matter if it’s landscape or portrait but in the case where your digital signage system doesn’t have this feature, what do you do? To solve this issue you need to have two sets of designs or templates – one in landscape and then one in portrait. Then, when scheduling the content the administrator needs to work out which screens will use the landscape content and which ones will use the portrait content. If you have more than 20 screens with a mix of landscape and portrait screen this can be a very tedious task. I guess if you have setup your screens to be within a group e.g Landscape screens, Portrait screens then this task may be easier but at the end of the day does your network require both screen orientations? If not, I would say stick with one type of screen orientation to minimise administration and design efforts.
As digital signage solution providers we provide consultancy services and help them understand the benefits and pitfalls of maintaining a digital signage solution.

Digital Signage Klips: Supermarket in Miami Florida
This week’s klip is sent in by Frank, who works for a company called Arcoiris TV network. They own a digital signage network inside supermarkets in Miami, Florida, USA.
As you can see from the pictures, the screens are located at the checkout. Obviously, this is the most ideal location as you have customers waiting in line to be served.
Thanks Frank for sharing this with our readers.
If you have klips you would like to share with the rest of our readers let us know by sending an email to info@digitalsignageblog.com

Digital Signage, Information Technology and the Audio Visual Industry
advertise me has been in the digital signage industry since its infancy in Australia and we’ve experienced the convergence of the Information Technology and Audio Visual industry. Both are now becoming so dependent on each other that professionals in the IT industry are learning skills from the audio visual industry and vice versa.
What are the main reasons behind this and which industry does digital signage fit in?
In this particular post I will attempt to explore these areas and hopefully others can follow and join me with sharing their thoughts and ideas on this particular topic.
Let’s firstly look at the roles and responsibilities of both industries:
The IT industry
Generally speaking, when someone uses the term IT (Information Technology), the first thing that comes to their mind is computers – basically this is what the majority of digital signage players are (embedded computers, laptops, desktops, Macs etc). One thing that needs to be clarified is that IT encompasses much more than computers, it covers broader areas such as software development, desktop management, server management (Windows, Linux, Mac, etc), network infrastructure, security and helpdesk support. All of these areas form the basic foundation of the IT backbone and digital signage is one of those technologies which have a great dependency on the IT framework. The design, stability of the overall IT infrastructure needs to work in order for the digital signage network to also be reliable and efficient.

The importance of NTP in digital signage
First of all, Happy New Year to all our readers – we hope you had a relaxing break and are energised for another year of digital signage. To kick off the year, we decided to engage our techie community and discuss about the importance of NTP.
NTP stands for Network Time Protocol and is commonly used to synchronise a computer’s/digital signage player‘s date and time with a specific time source server. It can be a hardware based GPS time source server from Symmetricon which I’ve used in the past, an Internet NTP server – see ntp.org for more information, or even your local Windows Active Directory Server can be used as a time server. The most challenging part when using NTP is ensuring that your actual source server has the correct date and time.
Most digital signage businesses should know what I’m talking about since ensuring the Content Management Server and digital signage player’s date and time are all in synch is crucial for any large digital signage network especially when used for scheduling content.

Using your Iphone as a mobile digital signage player?
This may sound a bit ridiculous but has anyone thought about using your Iphone as a mobile digital signage player? I mean lets think about this, if people can use the Iphone to watch movies and video clips why can’t it be used as an integrated digital signage player. The unit can be easily connected to the Internet and it also has a touch screen so really its perfect for interacting with your intended audience. With the sheer number of Iphone users out there, setting a digital signage network can be easily established.
All we need now is a digital signage Iphone application… and my guess is that someone is already developing one.

Forum Post: World Wide Digital Signage Network
One of our members on the digital signage portal submitted a very interesting and intriguing post about establishing a world wide network of small digital signage operators. My thought on this is how we go about approaching this and what standards, if any should all the operators follow.
Has anyone else thought about this approach or wanting to establish a digital signage network with other operators? If so, feel free to participate in the discussion forum.
