Guest Post: Making the switch from Print to digital

Written by Guest Blogger Eugene Capon II from Capon Design

I first started in the digital signage space a year and a half ago. All my experience was in graphic design, web design and print. After a 3 month internship where there was an intense learning curve about the digital signage space, I was hired as the head of creative for a digital signage manufacturer. As a requirement, I often did tech support for those
trying to design their own creative. But after a while I noticed a trend. 90% of the phone calls were from print shops who have had years of experience working in print space and were now trying to tackle this new medium. This tutorial will help you get started in making content for digital displays as it addresses differences between the print and digital mediums. continue reading »

Digital Signage Marketing 101 – Pleasure and Pain

digital signage is one of the fastest growing digital mediums to help businesses market and advertise their products and services. For those who have been in the industry already know what I’m talking about. Just recently, a friend of mine shared some basic 101  marketing information which I found very useful and thought I’d “pay it forward” and share this with everyone. Basically, he heard this from one of Anthony Robbin’s seminars about associating advertisements with Pain and Pleasure. From what I could understand from his explanation it went something like this:

  • We tend to avoid pain but we are attracted to pleasure.
  • Use pleasure and pain in advertisements as a call to action.
  • There was an example given for a telephone company advertisement. This advertisement showed how a son hasn’t called his mother in a while (this is associating pain) and it showed a picture of the mother being quite sad. Obviously the son was feeling guilty and by simply calling his mother, it made her happier (this is associating pleasure).

When we develop our digital signage content, do we use this marketing strategy?

Here’s an inspirational quote from Anthony Robbins:

My definition of success is to live your life in a way that causes you to feel a ton of pleasure and very little pain – and because of your lifestyle, have the people around you feel a lot more pleasure than they do pain.

“Video in Print” Player

American television network CBS has embedded a digital video player in a print ad in the Entertainment Weekly magazine issue for release next month.

The content of the video is a co-branded campaign between CBS and PepsiCo playing the network’s broadcast show line-up together with a Pepsi Max promotion. It operates by opening the page to activate the player coupled with audio to enhance the experience.

More information can be read at:

This brings a whole new gateway of executing marketing messages being delivered to consumers. Imagine watching a trailer to the next big blockbuster.

Whether or not this new concept will trigger a wave of digital mediums within print, I will surely keep my eyes open to see what the response will be like. The technology does come at a price and somebody has to pay for it, and the results are yet to be tested.

How will this be accepted amongst the wide audience?
Having that “wow” factor for the reader/viewer, or throwing those irritating stares at the person sitting next to you on the bus/train or at a library who is watching a video out of a magazine while you are trying to finish off the next few chapters of your favourite novel.

Feel free to continue this discussion at the digital signage portal forums, or post a comment on it here.

Thanks to Travis from Blue Pony for this lead.

Where do you see this concept in the near future?
