Looks like the Japanese has done it again – this time in the toilets. Sega has just launched a trial for this month at four male bathrooms in pubs and game arcades. Basically, you can play games using your urine. I while ago I blogged about Digital Signage: Location, location, location and how important it is to target the right audience and mentioned how toilets was an example of targeting a specific gender. I’m glad someone thought about this.

Now, each of the urinals has a pressure sensor installed with a small digital screen located at eye levels. The system visitors to play games and then an advertisement will be displayed at the end of the game. Some of the games available are:

Graffiti Erase – this is where the user needs to aim at at the pressure sensor to erase a virtual graffiti.

Mannekin Pis – this is named after the Brussels fountain depicting a boy uriniting. This games basically measures the amount of volume of the persons stream.

The North Wind and The Sun and Me – this game measure the strength of the urine stream and determines how much of the virtual girl’s skirt gets blown up by the digital wind – I’m pretty sure this game will be quite popular.

Splashing Battle – just another battle to see how has the stronger stream strength. You’ll be competing against the previous users.

Has anyone in Japan played any of these games? We’ll love to hear from you.

Here’s a video showing the games:

For those of you who have watched the facebook movie, “The Social Network” did you notice the video wall at the scene when facebook reached past the 1 millionth member? Although the video wall was just displaying the countdown, it did show us how screens can be used in corporate environments to show information to the wider audience. So, I was wondering whether any company or business has integrated facebook to their digital signage system?

This weekend every australia citizen had to vote for a new government. When I attended my local voting centre I noticed how digital signage was not there. There was a lot of the traditional papers being distributed as well as posters but there was no signs of screens or audio systems. I was disappointed when I saw this and want the politicians to know how digital signage can be utilised at election events. Here are my thoughts:

1. Communicate and engage the public – many of us don’t know who we are voting for and why we should vote for someone or for their party. I honestly didn’t have a clue who was an the ballot. I did see the ads on TV from both parties but I’m pretty sure most of us don’t have time to watch the ads so we wouldn’t have most likely have seen the ads. Engaging the public at an election event is very critical and obviously both parties want any vote that they can get. So what better way to engage the people through a digital signage system. The set up would be very simple or complex. The same marketing concept ‘making a purchasing decision at the counter’ will still apply here. If the politicians engaged the audience through a video to explain their promises to the community then at the last minute the voters may be swayed to vote for them. I believe its quite important to do this especially before the voters make their final decision.

2. Instructions – I found that there were no clear instructions for voters who were not able to understand English. My guess most of these people had a blank vote. It would have been good if there was a kiosk or screen explaining what to do in English. Even maybe an iphone app.

3. Digital voting screen – I still don’t understand why we can’t vote online or through a digital system like a touchscreen or kiosk. We should use technology at our own advantage so why not do it at these events. I wasted half an hour on the weekend just because I had to physically visit a voting centre.

4. Think of the environment – too much paper and ink was wasted at this election. Although most of this was recycled I believe it could have been replace by a digital system. The initial cost could have been expensive but the equipment could have been rented and possibly donated to the school.

For those of you who don’t know australia has a hung parliment.

Did anyone see any digital signage at their voting Centres?

What does it take to develop a great digital signage sales proposal?

Whichever way you look at it, spending the time and money to develop a great digital signage proposal is one of the best ROI outcomes that your business will see. So were do you start with creating a proposal if you haven’t done one before. Putting together the first digital signage proposal will always be the most difficult but if it’s done right you can re-use this and develop a template to suit your business and your clients. Now, you have to remember that creating a great digital signage sales proposal can be a major difference between your company’s success or failure and this depends on how well you delivered and prepared for the proposal.

When I think about the term proposal, I always think about a document that is supplied to the potential client. However, a video or a sales presentation can also be a proposal so use your imagination and determine the best way to deliver your proposal.

Here are a few tips to get you started with developing your digital signage proposal:

Why Your Business?

You need to distinguish your digital signage business from all other digital signage companies out there. Let your potential client know why your digital signage products or services will be vital to them achieving future goals. Keep in mind that the digital signage industry is growing so there are more companies jumping into this market so you need to be able to provide your clients with something “new” or “different”.

Educate

For those clients who are new to digital signage, you need to educate them about digital signage and what they can achieve by using this technology. The best way to do this is pretend that you’re talking to a little kid and avoid talking in techie terms unless you’re audience has a techie background. The use of flowcharts, diagrams, tables and figures are always helpful with helping people to understand what you’re talking about.

Persuade

Use key words to persuade your client to purchase or take up your services and at the same time be genuine. Avoid using words to force your client to make a decision on the spot and as they may potentially walk out the door. Give them enough time to go through the entire proposal and then follow up.

ROI

Make it clear how your digital signage proposal is going to make their investment worthwhile, and when they should start to see results. Charts and graphs are very useful ways to help convey this, and the more colorful and easily understood, the better. If you do have case studies then talk about these in your proposal and keep highlighting the fact that digital signage is able to increase sales and revenue.

Also detail and breakdown all the associated costs the client will need to pay. There are many other pointers and we would love to hear from most of you.

What information should you include in your proposal?

It’s another weekend so you know what that means? It’s time for some weekend fun. For this weekend fun post, I thought I’d look around for a fun video to post. Generally, most of the content for digital signage is serious (depends on the environment) but I believe that sometimes it’s those funny ads that stand out and makes it go viral. So here’s a Youtube video clip of a McDonald’s funny advertisement:

What I found most interesting about this video from McDonalds is that it doesn’t matter which language the video is in, as long as it portrays the intended message to the audience then in my eyes it’s definitely a sure winner!

Say goodbye to LCD and Plasmas screens and let’s make way for the latest LED screen technology. You may have already started noticing that prices for LCD screens and Plasma screens have been dropping in the past few years and one of the many reasons for this is the introduction of the next screen technology “LEDs”. Now, your typical LED billboards have been around for quite some time now but now screen manufactures are developing screens for the home and for commercial purposes.

So today, we thought we’d look at some of the features of the Samsung LED HDTV and in particular the UN55B8000 (55″ 1080p LED HDTV). Firstly, you’ll probably have already noticed by the description that the screen is 55 inches – yes it’s big but also it’s ultra slim (1.2″ deep). The other great features about this unit is that it is environmentally friendly – it uses 40% less power consumption than the traditional LCD screens.

The other additional features is that it is Internet@TV capable, meaning it allows you to receive content via Yahoo!®, Flickr®, and other online TV Widgets on screen (would this be good enough for digital signage???). USB 2.0 Movie: Multi-Media Center makes it easy to watch movies, browse photos and listen to music on your TV. But wait, there’s more! Just say you feel like playing a game of chess or cooking instead of watching TV. Samsung Series 8 LED TV’s Content Library Flash feature lets you do just that. Enjoy hours of built-in entertainment features, then personalize it by adding content that’s available online. And downloading is easy. There’s so much you can do with te Series 8 LED TVs.

In terms of price… it’s not so bad, it’s actually only US$3,999.99 (who uses 1 cents these days?). Anyways, if you’re intending to capture your audience using the best picture quality – bright and clear images then look no further… LED is the way to go.

We would love to review this product when it hits Australia, so if someone from Samsung wants us to review the product send us an email to review@advertiseme.com.au

UN55B8000 55″ 1080p LED HDTV

With the features of the Samsung LED UN55B8000 HDTV, what are your thoughts about using this as a digital signage player?

Feel free to submit your answer as a comment.

I mean lets think about this, if people can use the Iphone to watch movies and video clips why can’t it be used as an integrated digital signage player. The unit can be easily connected to the Internet and it also has a touch screen so really its perfect for interacting with your intended audience. With the sheer number of Iphone users out there, setting a digital signage network can be easily established.

All we need now is a digital signage Iphone application… and my guess is that someone is already developing one.

We’ve been pretty busy working on a project and slacked off in posting blog entries. We’ll hopefully post information about the project that we are working on at a later stage but we thought we’d mention how digital signage is everywhere. We recently walked in the busy streets of Bondi junction Australia and noticed how common it was for businesses to have display screens in their stores. The majority of these shop were displaying content from a DVD player, or showing live TV whilst others were actually displaying in house advertisements.

One thing that I noticed was that even thought Mothers day was approaching, not many businesses had any relevant messages relating to this event. Even today, being mothers day, businesses were not using digital signage to their advantage. Oh well maybe its just Australia… My thinking is that maybe one day, businesses will be educated and skilled in the digital signage technology to update and stay connected with their audience.
