Parramatta Westfield LED Screen

In one of our previous blogs http://www.digitalsignageblog.com/2009/11/24/shopping-centres-battle-of-the-big-screens/, we talked about the largest screens in shopping centres and apparently we saw another one the other day in the Parramatta Westfields centre. continue reading »

Australian Uni Students develop rival to Microsoft Surface

I came across an interesting article on TheAustralian.com.au website (I was reading the article from my Blackberry via RSS) and I wanted to share  this with everyone – especially after we posted an article on the weekend talking about the Microsoft Surface. What makes this article interesting is the fact that there may be a rival system (application is called Focus) to the Microsoft Surface. According to the article the application uses cameras to interpret gestures and movements made across a table to control an onscreen computer interface. In this case it can be a table like the Microsoft Surface. What’s more interesting is that the hardware costs less than $5000 (consists of a projector, a laptop, a motion sensor and a table) and it integrates with the Apple iPhone.

This may be a good opportunity for us to interview these students if we get a chance since they are local students.

Have a read of the article here and there’s also a video explaining how the system works.

Which one would you use, Microsoft Surface or Focus?

3D modelling and animation – content for digital signage

If you’ve seen the movie Avatar then you should know that I’m refeering to when I mention about 3D. Yes, 3D technology is now becoming more affordable but importantly its catching the attention of the digital signage industry. Various screen manufacturers have released 3D screens that do not require the use of 3D glasses. As more of these screens are being installed in retails stores or corporate offices, businesses will need 3D content to place on these screens.

Digital Signage software: Firefox 3.6

For those of you who didn’t know, there are quite a number of digital signage players in the market that are using Mozilla Firefox on the Linux platform as their default browser to play content. To the viewer, this does not become apparent since the developers cleverly designed the application to run in full screen so when content is played you don’t see the tool and menu bars.

One of the many reasons why most digital signage companies are using Firefox compared to Internet Explorer is due to the fact Firefox is open source and comes with many add-ons. One of these add-ons is the ability to run the application in Kiosk or Digital Signage mode. The other obvious point is that it’s free and comes packaged with many Unix based OSes.

The perfect digital signage player

You may be quite disappointed when you read this but I’m quite sad to say that since the start of my professional career in the digital signage industry I do not believe there is a “perfect” digital signage player in the market. Like everything else in this world nothing is perfect and depending on our perception of what perfect is, we may not be able to find one.

The importance of NTP in digital signage

First of all, Happy New Year to all our readers – we hope you had a relaxing break and are energised for another year of digital signage. To kick off the year, we decided to engage our techie community and discuss about the importance of NTP.

NTP stands for Network Time Protocol and is commonly used to synchronise a computer’s/digital signage player’s date and time with a specific time source server. It can be a hardware based  GPS time source server from Symmetricon which I’ve used in the past, an Internet NTP server – see ntp.org for more information, or even your local Windows Active Directory Server can be used as a time server. The most challenging part when using NTP is ensuring that your actual source server has the correct date and time.

Most digital signage businesses should know what I’m talking about since ensuring the Content Management Server and digital signage player’s date and time are all in synch is crucial for any large digital signage network especially when used for scheduling content.

Do you think NTP is important in a digital signage network?

Shopping Centres – Battle of the big screens

Shopping centres attract over $8 million customers each week nationally, so when you have these pairs of eyes walking in the shopping centres who would want to have the biggest screen to attract the attention of these customers. How to enable the Blackberry Media Transfer Protocol

Today I had a breakthrough with trying to get my blackberry to connect to any computer and use it as a storage device. My dilemma was that I could not connect my blackberry to any PC for transferring files to/from unless I installed the Blackberry Software + the Media Manager.

See where I’m coming from… wouldn’t it be just great to connect the Blackberry to any PC using the USB cable and just transfer the files? We’ll after a bit of researching I found out the solution. It seems like many of the Blackberry users had this problem.

Here’s the step by step instructions on how to get this working:

On the Blackberry

1. Go to Option
2. Go to Memory
3. Make sure you have the following (this is what I have set up on mine):

Media Card Support: On
Encryption: None
Media Transfer Protocol: On
Mass Storage Mode Support: On
Auto Enable Mass Storage Mode when connected: Prompt

Save these setting.

Now you will need to download some software which I found from pinstack.com (registration is required)

1. Open the file using winrar

2. Extract the files to your computer

3. Execute the file called BB storage Activation new.bat

4. A DOS window will come up and it will start Connecting to the Blackberry to upload an image to the rom. Let this run until you see the pause prompt and it will ask you to press any key. Close this window by pressing the x on the top right hand corner. Pressing any butting will cause the application to upload the image again.

Make sure you wait for the blackberry to completely boot.

Once its done connect the blackberry to the computer and you it will start installing drivers and if you open up windows explorer you will see a drive for the blackberry.

Done. Wish I knew about this earlier… it’s been almost a year since I had the unit!!!!

Weekend Fun or NOT: Displaying incorrect Facebook Events date

This weekend we almost missed an important event that was created and organised through the facebook events application. For some reason, the event displayed the correct date on the Facebook website, but on the iphone and the blackberry it showed the incorrect date (using the mobile application) – the reminders were not triggered because of this issue. My guess is that there is probably an issue related to the timezone (ie Australia). Does anyone else have the same issue?

If you’re integrating facebook with your digital signage application and are displaying events just make sure you check and test that the dates are displaying correctly before publishing this to the screens.

Digital Signage – Brisbane Casino

During one of our business trips to Brisbane Australia, we visited the Brisbane casino. When a colleague of mine told me the building I was looking at was the casino, I didn’t believe him. This is what I saw:

Digital Signage At Brisbane Casino

From the outside it looked like a museum, but it was not until we actually walked into the building that I couldn’t believe my eyes – it was a casino and most surprisingly digital signage was everywhere. Unfortunately I couldn’t take any photos of the screens but I noticed that each of the playing tables there was a screen displaying information. I was particularly intrigued about the roulette table, since the screen instantaneously displayed the winning number as soon as the ball landed. I stood there for a while trying to figure out how this was achieved and I came to the conclusion that the digital signage system included a sensor to determine where the number landed on the roulette table. Does anyone else know how this actually works? I also came up with the silly idea that someone watching through one of the cameras was typing this information in the system….

There were screen literally everywhere you looked; at the top of the teller stands, at the waiting areas, at the cafe, at each table and pretty much in every corner of the room. This got me thinking how maybe we should target and approach casinos with a good innovate digital signage system.

Digital Signage Portal reaches 300 members

digitalsignageportal-300Today, the digital signage portal (http://www.digitalsignageportal.com) has reached 300 members… although these numbers may seem small but we think it’s a good achievement considering we haven’t spent that much time to market and grow this website.

Next year we have a number of goals we plan to achieve and we have already started planning for some of these changes. One of them is offering advertising to selected digital signage companies (if you are interested please email info@digitalsignageportal.com) but more importantly we will revamp the design and layout of the website.

For those of you who haven’t visited the portal yet, what are you waiting for? Registration is free.

Digital Signage Marketing 101 – Pleasure and Pain

digital signage is one of the fastest growing digital mediums to help businesses market and advertise their products and services. For those who have been in the industry already know what I’m talking about. Just recently, a friend of mine shared some basic 101  marketing information which I found very useful and thought I’d “pay it forward” and share this with everyone. Basically, he heard this from one of Anthony Robbin’s seminars about associating advertisements with Pain and Pleasure. From what I could understand from his explanation it went something like this:

  • We tend to avoid pain but we are attracted to pleasure.
  • Use pleasure and pain in advertisements as a call to action.
  • There was an example given for a telephone company advertisement. This advertisement showed how a son hasn’t called his mother in a while (this is associating pain) and it showed a picture of the mother being quite sad. Obviously the son was feeling guilty and by simply calling his mother, it made her happier (this is associating pleasure).

When we develop our digital signage content, do we use this marketing strategy?

Here’s an inspirational quote from Anthony Robbins:

My definition of success is to live your life in a way that causes you to feel a ton of pleasure and very little pain – and because of your lifestyle, have the people around you feel a lot more pleasure than they do pain.
- Anthony Robbins

To upgrade or not to upgrade… that is the question!

Digital Signage Version - to upgrade or not to upgradeSometimes being a digital signage solution provider can be a tough and challenging job. Not only do you have to represent the company you’re selling the product for but you’re also consciously looking after the best interest for the client and here’s a typical dilemma:

One of our clients requested a feature to a digital signage software component which wasn’t that much of an issue except we required the services of the digital signage software company and there was a cost associated with this feature (the client was happy to pay for this). But all this came with  a little  unanticipated catch – the client was required to upgrade to the latest version of the software before the modification patch would work. Many of us might be thinking,  “That’s easy, there’s no harm in doings so as the latest patch will resolve and fix previous bugs”…. Ummmmmm…. WRONG!!!

By upgrading the software we found quite a number of bugs and spend quite a number of hours investigating and then reporting the issue to the manufacturer whilst the client had to workaround the problem. Fortunately, we provided the client with a test environment and didn’t upgrade the development system with the latest software.

I’m not sure whether many of you have experienced this but upgrading to the latest version can actually introduce new bugs. What’s worse is that a considerable amount of time can be spent investigating the issue and the  time for this may not be chargeable – who do you charge for this type of work…. the client who has already paid for a working solution ? or the digital signage company who supplied the dodgy software?

This is a tough one and I’ll like to hear from anyone who has been through this experience.

So there are a few lessons that I have learnt from this:

1. ALWAYS make sure you test the upgrade or software patch on a test unit or environment

2. ALWAYS back up your content or system before applying any patches as you’ll  never know the state of the unit after the reboot

3. PLAN for any changes you make to the system and carefully provide detailed rollback plans in the event the change failed

4. TRUST and have some faith that the developers have done their testing but acknowledge that they cannot test all the different scenarios

5. Make sure you charge someone for your work or include this as part of your Maintenance and Support costs… or even better get the manufacturer to conduct intensive testing with your configuration before applying any patches or upgrades

6. IF IT’S NOT BROKEN LEAVE IT AS IT IS… sometimes making a simple change can break the entire system… but if you’ve done the above point 2 & 3 correctly then this shouldn’t be an issue.

“Video in Print” Player

American television network CBS has embedded a digital video player in a print ad in the Entertainment Weekly magazine issue for release next month.

The content of the video is a co-branded campaign between CBS and PepsiCo playing the network’s broadcast show line-up together with a Pepsi Max promotion. It operates by opening the page to activate the player coupled with audio to enhance the experience.

More information can be read at:
http://adage.com/brightcove/lineup.php?lineup=1266084202
http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2009/08/cbs-embeds-a-video-playing-ad-in-a-print-magazine/
http://itvt.com/story/5468/cbs-place-interactive-video-player-entertainment-weekly-print-advertising-spread

This brings a whole new gateway of executing marketing messages being delivered to consumers. Imagine watching a trailer to the next big blockbuster.

Whether or not this new concept will trigger a wave of digital mediums within print, I will surely keep my eyes open to see what the response will be like. The technology does come at a price and somebody has to pay for it, and the results are yet to be tested.

How will this be accepted amongst the wide audience?
Having that “wow” factor for the reader/viewer, or throwing those irritating stares at the person sitting next to you on the bus/train or at a library who is watching a video out of a magazine while you are trying to finish off the next few chapters of your favourite novel.

Feel free to continue this discussion at the digital signage portal forums, or post a comment on it here.

Thanks to Travis from Blue Pony for this lead.

Where do you see this concept in the near future?

The Digital Signage Blog is moving…

We decided not to post anything this week as we have been informed that our hosting provider will be moving this website to a new server – it’s meant to have increased
performance and reliability.

So just to be on the safe side, we decided not to post anything until we know that we’ve been fully migrated across. Until then, we hope you’re having a wonderful day.

Advertise Me Interviews Ronni CEO of Minicom Digital Signage

Many of us in the digital signage industry have in one way or another read their blog, heard or even used one of their products – I’m referring to no other than Minicom.

This week we had the opportunity to turn the tables around and interview Ronni, the CEO of the Minicom Digital Signage Division:

Ronni CEO of Minicom Digital Signage

Ronni CEO of Minicom Digital Signage

advertise me: Hi ronni, thanks for joining us for this interview – I know you’re a hard man to catch with your busy schedule.
Ronni: Thank you for having me. Yes, it has been a very busy first half year.
Advertise Me: I thought we’d start something different today and want to firstly ask you what’s your “elevator pitch” when meeting new or potential clients (our readers)?
Ronni: Minicom Digital Signage is an established and recognized pioneer in the digital signage market, hence, we believe and are trusted that we know the market, the application and the needs. Our solutions control, extend and distribute multimedia and communication between the players and screens, making sure the message gets across… Our solutions reduce TCO and ease the DS deployments by providing the platform for in-site content distribution based on innovative technology.
Advertise Me: Please tell us a little about how Minicom Digital Signage started with Digital Signage, and what was the inspiration behind the business?
Ronni: Minicom Digital Signage has been a leading vendor for control and communication solutions in the computerized classrooms. Roughly ten years ago, we discovered that some of our integrators had been using the educational solutions to extend and distribute video signals in digital signage applications. This was during the days when you typed “digital signage” in Google, Google returned large format plotter printers. This is how we entered this market and swiftly recognized that we stepped into a major development, if not to say even advertising revolution. Since then we have been totally focused on the digital signage application, without looking left or right, resulting in a high degree of expertise. Other vendors come from the Pro-AV field, hence are more generalists and as a result of this they provide less focused solutions, answering the specific digital signage needs.
Advertise Me: Over the years, Minicom Digital Signage has proven to be a strong provider and leader of Digital Signage products, so what makes Minicom Digital Signage so successful?
Ronni: Once again: focus. Whoever turns to us, knows that we have accrued a decade of experience. We talk to all participants in the value chain on a daily level and maintain outstanding partnerships with most of the players in any layer of the market. We have recognized that the installers play an important role and consider the network owners as the effective endusers.
Advertise Me: There is now a trend of increasing Digital Signage solutions using Software as a Service (SaaS). What is your opinion on this?
Ronni: I believe it is part of the effort of the players in the market to find a suitable, competitive business model while maintaining an ongoing revenue stream. The digital signage market is project based, so for technology providers there is the challenge of captivating customers over a longer period of time. SaaS can be a win-win solution: at the one hand it dramatically reduces the capital expenditures for the network owners, at the other hand it provides the software vendors an ongoing, constant flow of income. I do believe that the model will further evolve and at the end of the day the industry will be more service driven.
Advertise Me: Quite a number of companies, including Minicom Digital Signage, are now starting to integrate their solutions with environmentally friendly plans. Can you elaborate on how Minicom Digital Signage is playing their part for a greener world?
Ronni: Our solutions reduce by their nature electricity consumption. With our architecture there is no need for a PC next to each screen. You may backrack all of the players in a single, secured room and dramatically reduce the number of PCs required since several displays can be fed from the same player. Furthermore, with our management platform, we allow all displays to be switched off when the shop closes. Besides, our technology is agnostic to the display, PC and SW vendors, hence, when upgrading a system, it doesn’t need to be swapped out.
Advertise Me: What has been the most successful and popular Minicom Digital Signage product?
Ronni: The DS Vision 3000 series has been a breakthrough in the market. Not only it carries full HD (1080p) signals as far as 600m and more, but it offers a built-in management platform, allowing to access and manage the display’s management port.

DS Vision 3000

DS Vision 3000

Advertise Me: Do you have any advice for people who are planning to start a business in the digital signage industry?
Ronni: There are lots of experienced and less experienced persons attracted by the positive vibrations coming from our market. Obviously, the lesser educated ones will not only burn themselves, but their customers will also suffer. It happens too often that a customer comes to us, asking us to it right after he had one-two failures before. So the bottom line for newcomers is to really understand the application, from content to measuring. There is no quick money in this market and competition is getting more intense. In any event, partnering with more experienced, established companies will always be an added value and accelerate the entry.
Advertise Me: What is the Minicom Digital Signage Certified Reseller program and why should businesses partner with Minicom Digital Signage?
Ronni: As mentioned, we invest a lot of attention and money into our long year old partnerships. Many of them have originated from the partner program. Networking is an important aspect in the market as we need each other in projects. Minicom Digital Signage, being a pioneer in the market, has a lot of legacy value to offer and with the partner program we provide access to these assets.
Advertise Me: This is our final question. What do you see as the next “BIG THING” in digital signage?
Ronni: I am not a prophet and we are driven by evolution, rather than revolution. So by nature it is hard to answer this question. However, we do observe an increasing engagement by more important players from the traditional advertising and OOH markets in the digital signage playground. This will ultimately change the rules of the game and lead to major consolidations.
Advertise Me: Ronni, thanks for taking part in this interview and we hope to speak to you again in the near future.
Ronni:

Thank you very much. It has been my pleasure and honor.

Upcoming Digital Signage Videos using the Sony HDR-XR520V

Today, we received our new HD camcorder – the Sony HDR-XR520V. We can’t reveal too much what our plans are but all we can say is that you’ll probably see more High Definition Video on our blog and most of our other websites.

We haven’t had enough time to play with it yet but so far we are quite impressed with the quality and features of the unit. Some of the features are:

  • has a massive 240GB internal hard drive
  • has a Exmor R technology on a 1/2.88-inch CMOS sensor (I’m not sure exactly what this means but I’m guessing its good to have)
  • has a built-in GPS mapping system
  • a special Active Mode image stabilization enhancement feature
  • at the top of the unit also has a Sony accessory shoe which can be used to connect a microphone to it
  • + too many other features that it will take too long to list.

Here’s a picture we took of the Sony HD camcorder by using our Nikon D60 Digital SLR Camera:

Make way for the Samsung LED HDTVs

samsung led

Samsung LED 55" HDTV Image Source: www.samsung.com

Say goodbye to LCD and Plasmas screens and let’s make way for the latest LED screen technology. You may have already started noticing that prices for LCD screens and Plasma screens have been dropping in the past few years and one of the many reasons for this is the introduction of the next screen technology “LEDs”. Now, your typical LED billboards have been around for quite some time now but now screen manufactures are developing screens for the home and for commercial purposes.

So today, we thought we’d look at some of the features of the Samsung LED HDTV and in particular the UN55B8000 (55″ 1080p LED HDTV). Firstly, you’ll probably have already noticed by the description that the screen is 55 inches – yes it’s big but also it’s ultra slim (1.2″ deep). The other great features about this unit is that it is environmentally friendly – it uses 40% less power consumption than the traditional LCD screens.

Samsung LED HDTV Content Management

Samsung LED HDTV Content Management Image Source: www.samsung.com

The other additional features is that it is Internet@TV capable, meaning it allows you to receive content via Yahoo!®, Flickr®, and other online TV Widgets on screen (would this be good enough for digital signage???). USB 2.0 Movie: Multi-Media Center makes it easy to watch movies, browse photos and listen to music on your TV. But wait, there’s more! Just say you feel like playing a game of chess or cooking instead of watching TV. Samsung Series 8 LED TV’s Content Library Flash feature lets you do just that. Enjoy hours of built-in entertainment features, then personalize it by adding content that’s available online. And downloading is easy. There’s so much you can do with te Series 8 LED TVs.

In terms of price… it’s not so bad, it’s actually only US$3,999.99 (who uses 1 cents these days?). Anyways, if you’re intending to capture your audience using the best picture quality – bright and clear images then look no further… LED is the way to go.

We would love to review this product when it hits Australia, so if someone from Samsung wants us to review the product send us an email to review@advertiseme.com.au

Wirespring Survey: How Much Should Digital Signage Cost?

Wirespring is currently running an interesting survey called: How much should digital signage cost and I’ve just completed it. The survey basically looks at how much different digital signage hardware and services cost – now I assumed that the survey was in US$ and not local AU$.

Bill Gerba explains in his post that participating in this survey is worthwhile because:

1.  demand-driven pricing estimate is a great way to check the accuracy of all of the supply-driven pricing estimates out there.

2. it’s easier than voting with your wallet: by choosing the fair-value price for each item, you get to (anonymously) tell everybody who receives the survey data what’s on your mind.

So let’s get to it, complete the survey here. I’m very interested to see what the results are but we’ll have to wait until the end of August when the survey ends.

I’ve been using the blackberry storm for almost a year now and have also played around with my brothers iPhone during the same period so what I have found most interesting about these two mobile phones is the fact that they both don’t support flash on their mobile browsers. Now why is that – or have I not been searching hard enough?

Using flash is very common for most digital signage players/systems and ideally we would like this to be available on all browsers (both for PC and mobile).

Are you aware of any upcoming flash development/releases for the mobile phone browsers?

Digital Signage and Google Chrome OS

Today’s great news is that Google is planning to release it’s own OS called Google

Chrome OS and will compete against the almighty Microsoft Enterprise. We believe this is great news for the digital signage community because of the following reasons:

1. It’s Open Source and will be free. Moving towards an open source OS, will provide a significant savings to you and your clients.

2. According to Google, the Chrome O.S is fast and efficient. This is perfect for digital signage.

3. It’s lightweight – you will be able to install this on a netbook and run your digital signage application.

4. Its secure – like the Google Chrome browser, Google has designed the security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. This means spending less time patching!!!

5. Designed for the web – since most companies are now moving towards SaaS then this is a perfect match.

We look forward to testing various digital signage software on the Google Chrome and we can’t wait to get our hands dirty.

And a final note: Thanks google for making our life easier and cheaper for everyone!

Do you think there will be costs associated with using Google Chrome OS on a digital signage player?

Using your Iphone as a mobile digital signage player?

This may sound a bit ridiculous but has anyone thought about using your Iphone as a mobile digital signage player? I mean lets think about this, if people can use the Iphone to watch movies and video clips why can’t it be used as an integrated digital signage player. The unit can be easily connected to the Internet and it also has a touch screen so really its perfect for interacting with your intended audience. With the sheer number of Iphone users out there, setting a digital signage network can be easily established.

All we need now is a digital signage Iphone application… and my guess is that someone is already developing one.

Do you think that the Iphone should be used as a mobile digital signage player?

Digital Radio in Australia

Australia has just launched Digital Radio (launched on the 1st July 2009)!!!

Now if you live in a more advanced country than Australia you might be thinking to yourself, “We had Digital Radio several years ago!” but this shows that Australia is slowly catching up with the rest of the world and are embracing and deploying new technologies.

For those that don’t know much about digital radio, it’s basically like switching from your standard Analogue TV to Digital TV. Surely you must have seen the difference – better video and audio quality and better features.

Basically this is the same with Digital Radio, switching from your Analogue radio to digital means you receive crispier audio quality and additional features (i.e you can receive on screen information of what is actually being played, easily tune to your channels). Now like digital TV you needed to buy a set top box and much like with digital radio you will also need to purchase a digital radio receiver.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation is one of the main broadcaster of the digital radio services and if you live in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth you will be able to tune in to the digital radio service. If you don’t have one of these digital radio receivers you can easily purchase one at your local ABC Shop (even go to the ABC Shop website) or go to a leading electronics store.

How do you see digital radio being integrated with digital signage?
