Digital Signage Product: RFID technology

We are pleased to introduce a new interactive digital signage solution based on RFID technology: Samar SSM-K1 RFID Smartstand module.

Before we talk about the product, lets briefly define what the RFID technology is?

RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification. This is a technology which uses an automatic method of storing and remotely retrieving information between devices such as RFID tags.

Digital Signage RFID technologyNow, the Samar SSM-K1 RFID Smartstand module consists of a RFID antenna, RFID tags, RFID reader, a media unit, and an operating software. This unit can turn your static Point-of-purchase stand into a truly interactive marketing station. When a potential shopper picks up the merchandise, the RFID smart stand will automatically play the matching advertising clip on it’s LCD display. You can be sure that your advertising message is being delivered to the customer at the right place at the right time.

RFID technology in digital signage is starting to grow and it is a technology to watch out for in the near future. For more information about this product visit our online shop portal or to discuss more about this technology, visit our digital signage forum.

Digital Signage in other parts of the world

As mentioned in an earlier blog entry, Australia has always been playing catch-up with the rest of the world when it comes to adapting new technologies. One of the many reasons why Australia hasn’t been able to keep up with the digital signage technology is because the country does not have the infrastructure to support it. I guess you could argue that one of the key contributing factors is audience – without the audience, why do we need such fancy developments?

Coming back from a recent trip in Asia (South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong), it did not take me by surprise how well people are connected with technology there. Not only do the trains in Tokyo show you the next approaching station but you are informed of the latest albums on sale as well as getting a sneak-peak of what will be showing on TV that night. Whilst you’re waiting for a subway train in Seoul and Hong Kong, you’ll be updated with the latest food menu from the local fast-food chains.

McDonald’s Digital Signage in Hong Kong

As expected from a region with an audience of millions, it seems that the culture is so rich in technology that it has become part of their everyday lives. You could even catch the latest news headlines as well as the afternoon’s weather as you’re stopping by the 7 Eleven store in Taipei to pick up a few groceries. Digital Signage as it seems, is so commonly applied and strongly integrated into their everyday living.

It would be interesting to see what Australia will be doing in the next few years. To discuss this further, visit our digital signage forum.

Digital Signage: What is RS-232 and do I need it?

Did you know that many digital signage players and display screens support RS-232?

You’ve probably come across this terminology before but you most likely ignored it because you didn’t know what it meant.

RS-232 (Recommended Standard 232) is a standard for transmitting serial binary signals between devices. It is most commonly used in computer serial ports and has 9 pins on one end. For those of you who have used the good old Serial Mouses – that uses RS-232.

The main purpose of using the RS-232 port on a digital signage player is to control another device like an LCD/Plasma Screen, touch screen or projector (the unit must support RS-232). For example, with RS-232 the digital signage player is able to send a signal to switch the LCD screen on or off – this means you have full remote control of the screen.

Below is an image of a digital signage player (SMP-WEB3) which has a COM port (2) for RS-232 connectivity. For more information about this player visit our online shop.

SMP-WEB3 RS232

Do I need it?

Well, it all depends on your requirements. If you need to remotely control your screens or send serial data from one device to another then YES, you definitely need it. If not, it is always good to have this option just in case down the track you do decide to use it.

Digital Signage and motion detection technology

What is this technology?

Motion detect is the action of sensing physical movement in a given area. Motion can be detected by measuring change in speed or vector of an object or objects in the field of view. This can be achieved either by mechanical devices that physically interact with the field or by electronic devices that quantifies and measures changes in the given environment.

The application of Motion Detect including:

  • Home/Office/Factory Security System
  • Intelligent Illumination System
  • Alarm System
  • Air Condition System
  • digital signage System

How does this technology work?

When a moving object is detected by PIR (Passive InfraRed sensors), the Digital Signage System will either turn on the LCD backlight or boot up the system. At this moment, a clock starts to count down. If no moving object is detected in a pre-defined period of time, the Digital Signage System will either turn off the LCD backlight or shut down until a moving object is detected again.

Here is a visual explanation of how the technology works:
